Day 2 of Western Denmark - Århus, Herning, and Silkeborg

The second day started with breakfast at the hotel followed by a trek to our bus parked by the docks. After we got on the bus, we discovered that someone was missing. I won't mention any names but it put us back far enough to have to skip one of our stops for the day. Our first stop was to the Århus Crematorium that was designed by Henning Larsen. It was absolutly amazing for being a crematorium. I did see a sealed coffin in the back but I had gone off wandering. Then we went to the university and walked around the campus for awhile. We got back on the bus for a few hours to drive to the brand new Steven Holl museum and to explore the sculpture gardens around the nearby museums. The weather was great so of course I got a little sunburned across my face. Who knew you could get sunburned this far north? We then went to see a folkhøskole in Silkeborg. A folkhøskole is kind of the equivalent of a junior college. It is for students that have graduated high school and are not quite sure what they want to do with their lives. It provides them a place to live to be on their own and take classes of topics they might be interested in. This folkhøskole had a concentration on performing arts so there were dance studios and music classes. As we were getting a tour of the campus, we saw some younger boys that have not graduated high school yet but they were using the space to practice their juggling. Two of the boys were 15 and one was 16. They had only been practicing for a few years and were quite good. They said they have learned it all from YouTube videos. That night we stayed in a hostel near Legoland, the original Legoland.

The church in the Århus cemetery

The chapel at the Crematorium in Århus
(that is all natural daylight on a foggy morning . . . amazing)

The Århus University

The brand new Steven Holl museum in Herning
It opened on Sept. 9th so we were some of the first to see it.

An exhibit . . . he was alive but we couldn't get him to talk
(PITA would be all over that in the US)

My amazing apple cake with earl gray tea . . . it only cost me $14
